✅ Resigning from Your Current Role: A Step-by-Step Checklist
Resigning from a job is a big decision — and it can feel overwhelming. This checklist breaks down the key steps to help you exit with professionalism, protect your relationships, and prepare for your next opportunity with confidence.
Before You Resign
Reflect on Your Reasons Make sure you’re clear on why you’re leaving and how it may impact your finances, schedule, or family.
Talk to Your Supervisor (First!) Whenever possible, speak with your supervisor in person or by phone before submitting anything in writing. Be respectful and professional.
Write Your Resignation Letter Keep it short and to the point: include your intent to resign, your last day of work, and a thank-you to your employer.
Before Your Last Day
Close the Loop on Work Complete outstanding projects and transition responsibilities. Hand off files, write notes for your team, and aim to leave everything better than you found it.
Attend the Exit Interview (If Asked) Be honest but constructive. Offer thoughtful feedback — not frustration. Remember, how you leave says as much as how you worked.
Say Goodbye to Colleagues (optional but encouraged) Sending a short goodbye message to coworkers helps preserve your network and leaves a lasting positive impression.
